The perfect word

In a world of shifting loyalties, devious cons, and ever-evolving ideas, we need to know where to anchor our souls. We aren't diligent enough to analyze every counterfeit that comes our way, nor are we perceptive enough to expose every false philosophy. Human rationalism is not equipped to establish eternal truth. That's why we need help. Only God can point us in the right direction.

It's a comfort when we are searching for absolutes to actually find them. According to this proverb, such absolute truth will shield us. What from? Every subtle deceit, every malicious word, every doctrinal error, and every false messiah. Much to our dismay, the world is full of empty promises. If we are left to ourselves to figure them all out, we will spend our lives tossed around on tumultuous waves of competing "truths." By the time we obtain understanding by our own efforts, it's too late to settle on the foundation of God's wisdom. In short, we need to be anchored in revelation.

How do we do that? A daily time in God's Word is a good first step. It works truth into our minds on a regular basis. But is that really enough?

Here's a good pattern to follow: First, ask God every day to convince your heart of His truth and to give you discernment of lies. Second, find at least one verse a week to memorize. Chew on it, let it sink in, look at it from every angel, and come up with specific ways to apply it. Third, don't just study God's Word. Fall in love with it. Consume it as voraciously as your favorite meal. God has a way of working into our hearts the things we love. If we love the flawless Word, the flawless Word will dwell within us.

Jean Driscoll es un notable atleta. Ella ha ganado la maratón de Boston ocho veces. También ha participado en cuatro Juegos Paralímpicos y ganó cinco medallas de oro. Nació con Espina Bífida, Jean compite en silla de ruedas.

INSIGHT
El salmista afirma que el pueblo de Dios es seguro y no necesita temer (v.1), incluso en medio de problemas, trastornos y peligros (vv.2-3). Jean Driscoll is a remarkable athlete.  She has won the Boston Marathon eight times.  She has also participated in four Paralympic Games and won five gold medals.  Born with spina bifida, Jean competes in a wheelchair.

One of Driscoll's favorite Bible verses is Daniel 7:9, "The Ancient of Days was seated....His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire."  Seeing a connection between Daniel's vision of God and her own situation, she is able to pass along words of encouragement to others.  "Anytime I've had an opportunity to talk with people who use wheelchairs and feel bad about being in a chair, I tell them, 'Not only are you made in the image of God, but your wheelchair is made in the image of His throne!'"

Daniel's vision, of course, doesn't portray God as being impaired in motion.  In fact, some see God's "wheelchair" as a symbol of a just God sovereignly moving within human affairs.  Other passages speak of God's providence providing help to those who believe (Proverbs 3:25-26; Matthew 20:29-34; Ephesians 1:11). 

Jean Driscoll's faith in God has helped her triumph over personal challenges.  We too can be confident that the high and holy One is near and ready to help us if only we ask (Psalm 46).  -Dennis Fisher

INSIGHT
The psalmist affirms that God's people are secure and need not fear (v.1), even in the midst of troubles, upheavals, and dangers (vv.2-3).  The basis for this confidence is twice stated in the refrain:  "The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge" (vv.7,11).  The best known of Martin Luther's hymns, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" (also known as the "Battle Hymn of the Reformation"), is based on this psalm.

Si Josías, tipo de Judá, habían mantenido un diario, podríamos señalar esta primera entrada significativa: "Ocho años de edad hoy" (2 Crónicas Alísate). A esa tierna edad, Josiah tenía un cetro en su mano. Sin embargo no dejó las super-responsibilities de esos años le permite olvidar su creador. Por el contrario, "hizo lo que era agradable a la vista del Señor." (34:2)

Otra importante entrada podría haber sido "Dieciséis años hoy" (2 de crónicas de 34:3). Es entonces cuando comenzó a Josiah librar a su país de los santuarios paganos, ídolos e imágenes que habían acumulado durante los reinados de los reyes anteriores. Después purifica la tierra, Josiah ordenó la reparación y restauración del templo.

A rampage of revival

If Josiah, kind of Judah, had kept a journal, we might have noted this first significant entry: "Eight years old today" (2 Chronicles 34:1). At that tender age, Josiah had a scepter thrust into his hand. Yet he didn't let the super-responsibilities of those years allow him to forget his Creator. Rather, he "did what was pleasing in the Lord's sight." (34:2)

Another important entry might have been "Sixteen years old today" (2 Chronicles 34:3). That's when Josiah began to rid his country of the pagan shrines, idols, and images that had accumulated during the reigns of prior kings. After he purified the land, Josiah ordered the repair and restoration of the temple.

"Twenty-six years old" (2 Chronicles 34:8) was the midpoint of Josiah's 31-year reign. It was also Back-to-the-Word time. When Hilkiah the high priest stumbled across the "Book of the Law of the Lord as it had been given to Moses" (34:14) and had it read to Josiah, the king was devastated.

Josiah went on a rampage of revival, first making his people covenant to obey the Lord and his laws. Second, he destroyed all idols and required everyone to worship the Lord. And third, he initiated a Passover celebration on a scale that hadn't been seen since the time of the prophet Samuel.

Josiah did everything he could to bring Judah back to God and the treasury of his Word, but the clock of God's favor was running out. Sadly, because the people tired of Josiah's revival, within twenty-five years of Josiah's death, Jerusalem was destroyed and all it people taken in to captivity.

En la década de 1930, mi casa de infancia era cariñoso y feliz, pero mis padres fueron a menudo lejos. En esas ocasiones, el centro de calidez en nuestro hogar fue la cocina y nuestra ama de llaves diminuta, alegre llamado a Annie.

Pasé muchas horas con Annie, sentados en nuestra mesa de cocina leer libros o jugar con juguetes y escuchar su canto y zumbido espirituales e himnos. Desde su corazón brotaba un flujo continuo de la sabiduría, la alegría y la canción.

Los atenienses fueron abiertamente religiosas (v.22), adorando un panteón de deidades, incluso dedicando un altar "al Dios desconocido" (v.23), en caso de que habían pasado por alto y ofendido a una deidad que desconocían. Pablo utiliza esta sensibilidad religiosa como un puente el Evangelio.

on all the face of the earth.

Back in the 1930s, my childhood home was loving and happy, but my parents were often away.  On those occasions, the center of warmth in our home was the kitchen and our tiny, joyous housekeeper named Annie.

I spent many hours with Annie, sitting at our kitchen table reading books or playing with toys and listening to her sing and hum spirituals and hymns.  From her heart sprang a continual flow of wisdom, cheerfulness, and song.

One morning, with childish exuberance, I used a racial slur I had heard  "Oh my, no," she said, and then proceeded to pour out her heart in a gentle lecture on the harm and hurt in that, accompanied by a terrible sadness in her eyes.  I never used that word again.

I learned that we cause unfathomable sorrow when we dishonor and debase others through bigotry.  Every human being is created in the image of God-more like God than any other creature and worthy of honor.  To demean that image is to wound another human being at the deepest level.

There is but one race:  the human race. God "has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth (Acts 17:26).  We are of the same family made to be treasured and cherished by one another.  -David Roper

God desires that we show respect to all people,
because everyone bears His image.

INSIGHT
The Athenians were overtly religious (v.22), worshiping a pantheon of deities, even dedicating an altar "to the Unknown God" (v.23), in case they had overlooked and offended a deity they were unaware of.  Paul used this religious sensitivity as a bridge the gospel.
