OUR WAY OF LIFE

OUR WAY OF LIFE

READ:  Ephesians 1:1-10

We are what he has made us,
created in Christ Jesus for
good works, which God prepared
beforehand to be our way of life.
Ephesians 2:10 NRSV

I was struck by a phrase I heard quoted from a contemporary Bible translation.  When I Googled the phrase “our way of life” to locate the passage, many of the results focused on things people felt were threatening their expected way of living.  Prominent among the perceived threats were climate change, terrorism, and government policies.

What really is our way of life as followers of Jesus?  I wondered.  Is it what makes us comfortable, secure, and happy, or is it something more?

Paul reminded the Christians in Ephesus of the remarkable way God had transformed their lives.  “God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:4-5 NRSV).  The result is that we are “created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life” (v.10 NRSV).

Doing good works, helping others, giving, loving, and serving in Jesus’s name-these are to be our way of life.  They are not optional activities for believers, but the very reason God has given us life in Christ.

In a changing world, God has called and empowered us to pursue a life that reaches out to others and honors Him.  DAVID MCCASLAND

Father, thank You for the incredible riches of Your love and mercy.  You rescued us from our dead way of living and made us alive with Christ.

Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.  MATTHEW 4:16

INSIGHT
Paul makes an instructive distinction in Ephesians 2:1.  He tells his readers that they were dead in their transgressions and sins.  By using the past tense he establishes a new normal for those who follow Christ.  They are no longer spiritually dead, but are alive in Christ.  Paul makes a subtle distinction between transgression, the disobedience of known and established standards, and sin, missing the mark of God’s holiness.  He points out that when followers of Christ fall short of God’s perfect and holy standard, whether they know it or not, they are living lives that are no longer natural to the new life given to them.  The resurrection of Christ has brought our dead hearts to life.  DENNIS MOLES

LEAVING THE PAST BEHIND

LEAVING THE PAST BEHIND

READ:  2 Corinthians 5:12-21

Anyone who belongs to Christ
has become a new person.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT

Chris Baker is a tattoo artist who transforms symbols of pain and enslavement into works of art.  Many of his clients are former gang members and victims of human trafficking who have been marked with identifying names, symbols, or codes.  Christ transforms these into beautiful art by tattooing over them with new images.

Jesus does for the soul what Chris Baker does for the skin-He takes us as we are and transforms us.  The Bible says, “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.  Then old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT).  Before knowing Christ, we follow our desires wherever they lead us, and our lifestyles reflect this.  When we repent and begin to walk with Christ, the passions and pitfalls that once dominated our lives are the “old life” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11) that fades away as we are transformed.  “All this if from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:18).

Still, life as a “new person” isn’t always easy.  It can take time to disconnect from old habits.  We may struggle with ideas that were foundational to our old way of life.  Yet over time, God’s Holy Spirit works in us, giving us inner strength and an understanding of Christ’s love.  As God’s beautiful new creations, we’re free to leave the past behind.  JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

Jesus, thank You for the power of Your death and resurrection.  Your victory over sin means that I can be forgiven and can enjoy a new life in You.

To enjoy the future, accept God’s forgiveness for the past.

INSIGHT
Second Corinthians likely arrived around AD 56 and is improbably the fourth letter Paul sent to the church of Corinth.  Many scholars believe the apostle wrote a letter prior to the New Testament letter of 1 Corinthians (SEE 1 Corinthians 5:9) and that Titus delivered a third letter-one containing a severe reprimand-about a year after sending 1 Corinthians and before the New Testament letter of 2 Corinthians (SEE 2 Corinthians 2:3-4).  DENNIS MOLES

SHOCKING HONESTY

Our Daily Bread -- Shocking Honesty

Read: 1 Peter 3:7-12

Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered. —1 Peter 3:7 NLT

When the minister asked one of his elders to lead the congregation in prayer, the man shocked everyone. “I’m sorry, Pastor,” he said, “but I’ve been arguing with my wife all the way to church, and I’m in no condition to pray.” The next moment was awkward. The minister prayed. The service moved on. Later, the pastor vowed never to ask anyone to pray publicly without first asking privately.

That man demonstrated astonishing honesty in a place where hypocrisy would have been easier. But there is a larger lesson about prayer here. God is a loving Father. If I as a husband do not respect and honor my wife—a cherished daughter of God—why would her heavenly Father hear my prayers?

The apostle Peter made an interesting observation about this. He instructed husbands to treat their wives with respect and as equal heirs in Christ “so that nothing will hinder your prayers” (1 Peter 3:7). The underlying principle is that our relationships affect our prayer life.

What would happen if we exchanged the Sunday smiles and the façade of religiosity for refreshing honesty with our brothers and sisters? What might God do through us when we pray and learn to love each other as we love ourselves? —Tim Gustafson

Father, You love all of Your children, but so often we fight and disagree. Help us learn to interact with love and respect in all our relationships so the world will see the difference You make. Teach us to pray.

Prayer is simply an honest conversation with God.

INSIGHT: Husbands are instructed to “be considerate . . . and treat [their wives] with respect” (1 Peter 3:7). Fellowship with God is hindered if a man does not give honor to his wife (v. 7). The apostle Paul instructed husbands not to be harsh with their wives (Col. 3:19), but to love them “just as Christ loved the church,” sacrificing their own interests for their wife’s growth, maturity, and holiness (Ephesians 5:25-27). The husband is to “love his wife as he loves himself” (v. 33). Sim Kay Tee

NO DRIFTING

Our Daily Bread -- No Drifting

Read: Hebrews 2:1-4

We must pay the most careful attention . . . so that we do not drift away. —Hebrews 2:1

At the end of one school semester, my wife and I picked up our daughter from her school 100 kilometers (60 miles) away. On our way back home we detoured to a nearby beach resort for snacks. While enjoying our time there, we watched the boats at the seashore. Usually they are anchored to prevent them from drifting away, but I noticed one boat drifting unhindered among the others—slowly and steadily making its way out to sea.

As we drove home, I reflected on the timely caution given to believers in the book of Hebrews: "We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away" (Heb. 2:1). We have good reason to stay close. The author of Hebrews says that while the Mosaic law was reliable and needed to be obeyed, the message of the Son of God is far superior. Our salvation is  “so great” in Jesus that He shouldn’t be ignored (v. 3).
Drifting in our relationship with God is hardly noticeable at first; it happens gradually. However, spending time talking with Him in prayer and reading His Word, confessing our wrongs to Him, and interacting with other followers of Jesus can help us stay anchored in Him. As we connect with the Lord regularly, He will be faithful to sustain us, and we can avoid drifting away. —Lawrence Darmani

What do you know about Jesus that keeps you wanting to be near Him?

To avoid drifting away from God, stay anchored to the Rock.

INSIGHT: The word translated “drift away” appears only once in the New Testament (Hebrews. 2:1). It means to flow from alongside, flow past, or slip away. It is used figuratively to illustrate the gradual giving up of one’s belief in the truth or a drifting away from belief. The writer of Hebrews uses this uncommon word to warn the Hebrews to pay careful attention to and not ignore the message and miracles of Jesus. They announce and confirm the salvation He brings. HIS LOVING PRESENCE

HIS LOVING PRESENCE

READ:  Hebrews 13:1-6

Never will I leave you.
Hebrews 13:5

Our hearts sank when we learned that our good friend Cindy had been diagnosed with cancer.  Cindy was a vibrant person whose life blessed all who crossed her path.  My wife and I rejoiced when she went into remission, but a few months later her cancer returned with a vengeance.  In our minds she was too young to die.  Her husband told me about her last hours.  When she was weak and hardly able to talk, Cindy whispered to him, “Just be with me.”  What she wanted more than anything in those dark moments was his loving presence.

The writer to the Hebrews comforted his readers by quoting Deuteronomy 31:6, where God told His people:  “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you”  (Hebrews 13:5).  In the darkest moments of life, the assurance of His loving presence gives us confidence that we are not alone.  He gives us the grace to endure, the wisdom to know He is working, and the assurance that Christ can “empathize with our weaknesses” (4:15).

Together let’s embrace the blessing of His loving presence so we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid” (13:6).  JOE STOWELL

Lord, thank You for the promise that You will never leave me.  May the reality of Your constant supporting presence fill my heart with comfort, confidence, and courage.

During hard times, tough questions often arise such as “Where is God?” For help, read Out of the Ashes at

There is peace in the presence of God.

INSIGHT
The opening verses of Hebrews 13 are among the most practical in the New Testament.  The chapter begins with a reminder that as followers of Christ we are to love one another (v.1)..  The writer then challenges us to show hospitality to others (v.2), followed by a strong call to give mercy, help, and kindness to those imprisoned and those who have been mistreated (v.3).  Verse 4 challenges us to sexual purity in marriage, while verse 5 calls believers to a contentment that can defeat covetousness.  These practical statements find their culmination in the challenge to rest in the never-falling presence of God (vv. 5-6).

POPULAR INSANITY AND MASS DELUSION: THE ORLANDO SHOOTING AND SEX-CHANGE

POPULAR INSANITY AND MASS DELUSION: THE ORLANDO SHOOTING AND SEX-CHANGE

For more great blogs as this one go to Daniel’s blog site at:  www.Mannsword.blogspot.com

Blogger and “Christian,” Jen Hatmaker, believes that, somehow, Christians are complicit in the Orlando shooting. How could this be when the shooter swore allegiance to ISIS and not to Jesus? Does this mean that Christians are behind whatever ISIS does? It seems that Hatmaker is arguing that if Christians do not endorse all aspects of gay behavior, then they are “complicit” with whatever tragedy might befall the gays:

∑       I’ve been listening to my gay friends and leaders the last two days… and this is what I am hearing: It is very difficult to accept the Christian lament for LGBTQ folks in their deaths when we’ve done such a brutal job of honoring them in their lives. Anti-LGBTQ sentiment has paved a long runway to hate crimes…. We are complicit. https://juicyecumenism.com/2016/06/16/sorry-jen-hatmaker-christians-arent-complicit-happened-orlando/

I don’t even endorse all aspects of my own behavior. Am I then guilty of whatever ill befalls me, even if someone kills me? Were the Jews somehow complicit with their own genocide because they didn’t approve of all aspects of Nazi behavior? Are the victims of rape complicit with the rapist because they do not endorse rape? This is just another way of blaming the victim for “hate” and “intolerance.”

Let me just anticipate the insane backlash that will be used to discredit me:

∑       You are a bigoted homophobe to compare gay sex with rape.

But I’m not. Instead, I am using extreme examples to highlight the flaws in Hatmaker’s logic – that disapproval of a behavior equates with disapproval of the person and therefore guilt for whatever happens. Actually, this is hate speech (libel) – unjustly indicting and demeaning an innocent person or group of people. Doesn’t anyone esteem our right to speak freely?

At least, Hatmaker shows a thin ray of hope for Christians – that mass murder might provoke some compassion in them:

∑       It seems like the only harm toward the LGBTQ community that will overcome Christian disapproval is a mass murder.

It doesn’t matter to Hatmaker how much compassion has already been shown to the gay community by Christians. It will never be enough! Why not? Because of our refusal to totally embrace and endorse gay sex makes us haters and guilty of all kinds of evil.

But let’s try to follow Hatmaker’s logic! We also don’t approve of adultery. Does this make us complicit when the adulterer’s family falls apart? We don’t approve of pornography. Are we to be held to account when the pornographer destroys their relationships? We also do not approve of incest. Are we therefore complicit, when the abused son kills his abusing father?

Is society complicit in a murder whenever society refuses to sanction murder? Of course, this is insanity, but insanity reigns supreme in our government, schools, universities, and the media, and it’s getting worse all. It is so persistent that it has become the norm. Its “logic” is now accepted without question.

Modern insanity is sticky fly-paper. An entire society is held in its grip as it proclaims that it has the truth – the truth the all the feeble-minded who had come before the progressives had failed to grasp.

Rather than a society, it is the entire West that has fallen asleep and made their bed on the fly paper, which will not allow them to reason their way out of the insanity. They are opening their doors to people who want to kill the innocent, simply because they are not Muslim. It doesn’t matter to our secular elites what their Koran and Hadiths say about Jihad and world conquest. It doesn’t matter to our Brights that over 60% of Muslims report that they want a worldwide Caliphate. It doesn’t matter that, already, they have claimed their host nations and have set up their no-go-zones. It doesn’t seem to matter to our Freethinkers that rape is skyrocketing, Muslim Jihad camps are growing, or that the canary-in-the-Western-cages – the Jews - are fleeing in droves from the Jihadists. Nor do our elites consider that non-Muslims live as second-class citizens in all Muslim nations. Instead, they are convinced that they have the answers, and everyone who opposes them is a bigot.

Western insanity defies any attempt to catalogue it. The flies are immune to reason and even to the facts. Now, they have imposed transgenderism, and no one is allowed to speak against it. Any opposing voices are silenced. However, there are some who still haven’t been silenced.

Dr. Joseph Burger has warned that sex changes are no answer for the gender-confused:

∑       “They should be getting psychotherapy…These children are unhappy for a variety of reasons. They should be treated for their unhappiness. Cutting off penises and breasts is not the treatment for unhappiness.” (SALVOMAG.COM, Summer 2016, 9)

Now that sex change has become an “in” thing, even celebrated by our elites, in the UK, the number of children who are receiving treatment for “gender dysphoria” has jumped 1000% from 2010 to 2015. Of course, fly-paper reasoning can produce many “studies” that can convincingly demonstrate that this insanity is grounded in the facts, or can they?

The American College of Pediatricians has released a paper entitled, “Gender Ideology Harms Children,” in which they have concluded:

∑       “According to the DSM-V, as many as 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused girls eventually accept their biological sex after naturally passing through puberty.

∑       Conditioning children into believing a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthy is child abuse.” (Salve, 6)

Does sex-change ever help? Walt Heyer, in his 2006 book “Trading my Sorrows,” writes about his troubled experiences as a transsexual. The following was culled from his interview with LifeSiteNews.com:
∑       Heyer was a little boy growing up in California in the mid 1940s, interested in cowboys, cars and steel guitars when one day, his grandmother fancied that he wanted to be a girl. She naively made for him a purple chiffon evening dress that he would wear when he visited her. According to Walt, donning that purple chiffon dress triggered something that put him on a 35 year long path that led through a dark valley of “torment, disillusionment, regret, and sorrow.” His gender identity confusion led him into alcoholism, drug addiction, and attempted suicide…

Is Heyer’s experience representative of many others’? Evidently! A long-term follow-up study of transsexual persons undergoing sex reassignment surgery in Sweden found:

• Persons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behaviour, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population. Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism, and should inspire improved psychiatric and somatic care after sex reassignment for this patient group.

Madeline Wyndzen, a transgendered psychology professor, writes:

• "50% of transgenders could be struggling with suicide attempts, regret, anger and unhappiness living in a transgender sub-culture rather than being part of the larger world.”

A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey says:
• A staggering 41% of transgenders surveyed report they have attempted suicide and that those who have medically transitioned and surgically transitioned have higher rates of attempted suicide than the general population. Transgenders have higher rate of HIV infections. They are more prone to heavy drinking and the use of drugs. They have high rates of homelessness, unemployment and extreme poverty, even more so in the more difficult economic times of the last 5 years.

However, our Freethinkers have proved that ideology will always trump the facts. But according to them, transgenderism is something to celebrate, and if you refuse to do so, watch out.

How then do we define insanity? The easiest way is to say, “Just look at what has happened to the West!” However, we should be able to say more than this. If we can understand insanity, perhaps we can do something about it. Perhaps we can define insanity as “A comfort with willful blindness.” However, this suggests that as long as comfort remains, even the comfort of the fly-paper, so too will the willful, ideological blindness.

SERVING CHRIST

SERVING CHRIST

READ:  Ephesians 6:5-9

Obey [your earthly masters]…
as slaves of Christ, doing the
will of God from your heart.
Ephesians 6:6

“I’m a secretary,” a friend told me.  “When I tell people this, they sometimes look at me with a certain pity. But when they find out who I am secretary for, they open their eyes with admiration!”  In other words, society often defines some jobs as less important than others, unless those jobs happen to relate in some way to rich or famous people.

For the child of God, however, any occupation, regardless of the earthly boss, can be held proudly because we serve the Lord Jesus.

In Ephesians 6, Paul talks to servants and masters.  He reminds both groups that we serve one Master who is in heaven.  So we need to do everything with sincerity of heart, integrity, and respect because we are serving and working for Christ Himself. As the apostle Paul reminds us, “Serve whole-heartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people” (Ephesians 6:7).

What a privilege to serve God in everything we do, whether answering a phone or driving a car or doing housework or running a business.  Let us work with a smile today, remembering that no matter what we are doing, we are serving God.  KEILA OCHOA

Lord Jesus, I want to serve You in everything I do.   Help me, as I begin each day, to remember this.

Serving shows our love for God.

INSIGHT
The idea of serving others as an act of worship and service to the Lord is a recurring theme in Paul’s writings.  He tells the church at Colossae that “whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17).  He also instructs the church in Corinth, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
